I don’t – I develop the site, the client buys the domain name and hosting. I’ll arrange it for him, but I develop web sites, I don’t run a hosting company.

Ditto what was said before. Being a web host is an entirely different beast than developing a website. Web developers and designers simply do that aspect and will work within the limitations given to them. For example, a company may want to host their own website on their own computers and will only offer the ability to use JSP. They will find a developer who is comfortable with that. Other companies will want you to do the legwork to find the host. That’s fine, many developers will do that as well.

Agree with many here, we web developers only built websites, being a registrar or hosting company requires different expertise, investment and it is another kind of business.

Sometimes you can offer hosting by renting a server so you can be your small hosting but nowadays hosting is cheap so better leave this to the professionals. Domain names better dont get involved, let your client deal with it or help him but in the end let them own it and have the control on it.

Making money from domain registration and web hosting is a source of revenue often overlooked by web designers. Many of them think they need a lot of technical knowledge to do that.

This is simply not the case. Managing a reseller hosting account is no more complicated that managing your own hosting account. The hosting company will handle all the technical maintenance of the server and software updates etc. You only do routine support – and if you don’t know how to help your customer then you can always ask your hosting company.

Your customers will have their own control panel, so they can set up their own email accounts, and reset password etc. That will actually take a lot of the work out of your hands.

You can get an unlimited domain reseller account from Top 5 Hosting (http://www.top5hosting.com) for as little as $29.95 per month, or you can buy individual hosting packages for your customers from them for $2.99 per month.

There are many ways you can go about this as a web designer.

    1. Become an affiliate of a hosting company and tell your clients to go buy hosting there.

    2. Become a reseller and signup your clients under your account. You can find good reseller hosting companies at http://www.bestwebhostreseller.com

    3. Become a hosting company. If you have the capacity, you can rent a dedicated server and host more clients this way. To find dedicated server, you can try http://bestdedicatedserver.org

I agree, I personally LOVE HostGator!. But, I would recommend going through a site like http://hostgumbo.com just to pick up the freebies and giveaways they offer… but pick hostgator when you do. You won’t regret it. They are an experienced company and I’ve never had any downtime with my sites.
